A NĚCO MÁLO Z HISTORIE:

Ema Destinnová neboli Ema Pavlína Kittlová, pocházející z bohaté rodiny se narodila v Praze 26. února 1878. Chtěla být houslistkou a to dokázala tím, že svůj první solo koncert uskutečnila v osmi letech. Ve čtrnácti letech zjistila, že má nádherný hlas a rozhodla se, že se stane operní zpěvačkou. Studovala v Praze pod vedením Marie Loewe-Destinn a jako poděkování za její čas, úsilí, lásku a podporu při studiu zpěvu si změnila své jméno na Emmy Destinn v roce 1897 v Drážďanech při vystoupení jako Santuzza v Cavalleria Rusticana.
Byla považována za vynikající umělkyni, dramatické soprano s hlasem obrovské síly a barevné škály, mohutné kvality a flexibility. Účinkovala na světových premiérách známých oper a mimo jiné mluvila hned několika jazyky (bezchybnou němčinou, elegantní francouzštinou, perfektní italštinou a dokonalou angličtinou bez přízvuku). Ema Destinnová vytvořila řadu rolí mezi něž patří např. Silvie v d’Albertově Der Improvisator, Diemut ve Straussově Feuersnot, Elsu v Anno od Scholze, hlavní roli Louisy v Charpentierově opeře, Marguerite v Till Eulenspiegel od von Reznicka. Zpívala v Leocavallově Roland von Berlin jako Hedwiga, v Humperdinckově Heirat wider Willen, v Woikowsaky-Biedau Der lang Kerl, ve Straussově Salome, jako Milada ve Smetanově Daliborovi, Ganymede v Offenbachově La Belle Helene, jako Magdalena v Adamově Postillion z Lonjumeau, Senta v Fliegende Holländer, Nedda a Santuzza, Madame Butterfly. Zpívala také Verdiho a Pucciniho. Proslavila se jako představitelka Aidy, kdy tato role byla považována mnohými jako jedna z jejích nejlepších vůbec. Byla obklopena mnoha umělci jako např. Caruso, Charles Dalmores, Selma Kurz, Pauline Donalda, Clarence Whitehill a Marcel Journet.
V roce 1916 kdy Amerika vstoupila do první světové války se vrátila do Československa, aby se přidala k Dinh Gilly, který měl zde své vystoupení a posléze byl zadržován. Byla varována, že Rakousko-Uherská monarchie ji nenechá odjet, což se naplnilo a díky svému otevřeném vlastenectví k Československu byla také zadržena. Musela pobývat na svém letovisku ve Stráži až do zastavení nepřátelských akcí. Dinh Gilly bydlel ve Stráži s ní, kde ho Ema naučila několik českých písní, které pak společně nahráli. Tato doba měla však vážný dopad na její finanční situaci a Destinnová byla nucena prodat mnoho svých krásných šperků, které dostala darem od královských rodin.
Jako zajímavost by se dalo uvést, že mimo svůj pěvecký talent, byla v Československu známa i jako autorka románů, esejí, her, a textů písní pro různé skladatele. Také skládala písně sama a jako příklad by se dala uvést „Romance“, kterou nahrála pro nahrávací studio Victor.
V roce 1923 se vdala za Josefa Halsbacha, důstojníka českého bojového letectva a v roce 1926 ukončila svou divadelní kariéru. Destinnová ignorovala varování lékařů ohledně své diety a krevního tlaku, což mělo tragický následek. V podvečer 28. ledna 1930 zemřela ve věku 52 let na masivní mozkovou mrtvici.

Emmy Destinn or Ema Pavlina Kittlová the daughter of a wealthy family was born on 26 February 1878 in Prague. Emmy had wanted to be a violinist, and indeed, gave her first solo concert at the age of eight. By the time she was fourteen she had developed an outstanding voice and decided that she would like to become an opera singer. She studied in Prague with Marie Loewe-Destinn. In gratitude for the time, effort and support her teacher had spent while training her, she changed her name to Emmy Destinn when she made her debut in Dresden, 1897 as Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana.
She was considered to be an outstanding performer, dramatic soprano with a voice of great power and body, vibrant quality and flexibility. She was involved with many local and some world premieres of major operas, also possessing a natural facility in languages speaking a faultless German, classical French, perfect Italian and excellent un-accented English.
Emmy Destinn created Silvia in d’Albert’s Der Improvisator, Diemut in Richard Strauss’s Feuersnot, Elsa in Anno by Scholz, the title role in Louise in Charpentier’s opera, Marguerite in Till Eulenspiegel by von Reznicek. She sang in Leocavallo’s Roland von Berlin as Hedwig, in Humperdinck’s Heirat wider Willen, in Woikowsaky- Biedau’s Der lang Kerl, in Strauss’s Salome, Milada in Smetana’s Dalibor, Ganymede in Offenbach’s La Belle Helene and Magdalena in Adam’s Postillion von Lonjumeau, Senta in Fliegende Holländer, Nedda and Santuzza and Madame Butterfly. She was also Verdi and Puccini singer. She undertook Aida which some thought was her finest role. She was surrounded by artists of the front rank like Caruso, Charles Dalmores, Selma Kurz, Pauline Donalda, Clarence Whitehill and Marcel Journet. In 1916 when America entered the Great War, she returned to Czechoslovakia to join Dinh Gilly who had been interned while singing there. She was warned that the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy might not let her leave. This proved to be the case, and due to her outspoken patriotism for Czechoslovakia she was interned in her chateau at Straz and was not able to leave until the cessation of hostilities. Dinh Gilly lived at Straz with her, where she taught him a number of songs in Czech, a couple of which they recorded together. This period had a serious effect on her financial resources, and she was forced to sell much of the fine jewelry that had been presented to her by the Royal families.
It is interesting to note that she was also well known in Czechoslovakia as an authoress of novels, essays, plays, and texts for songs for several composers. She also composed songs herself, and for the Victor Record Company recorded one of them called ‘Romance’.
In 1923 she married Joseph Halsbach, a Czech Air Force officer. In 1926 Destinn decided to give up her theatrical career, but continued to ignore repeated medical advice about her diet and blood pressure with tragic results. She suffered a massive stroke and died aged 52 on the evening of January 28, 1930.
